Work to Ride: Transforming Lives Through Equestrian Excellence

At Blueprint Commercial, we’re passionate about supporting organizations that create lasting impacts in our communities. This month, we’re proud to feature Work to Ride, a Philadelphia-based non-profit that has been empowering underserved youth through equestrian sports for over 30 years.
Founded in 1994 by Lezlie Hiner, Work to Ride uses equine activities as a transformative tool for inner-city youth. With a mission to improve lives through education and equestrian training, the organization provides participants with opportunities to engage in riding, barn care, polo, and more. Located in West Philadelphia in Fairmount Park, the program offers a safe space for personal growth, teamwork, and skill-building.
From Participant to Leader: Kareem's Journey
The impact of Work to Ride is best exemplified by the story of Kareem Rosser, the organization’s Executive Vice President. Kareem and his siblings joined the Work to Ride program when he was eight years old. Through years of dedication, he mastered horsemanship and became a standout polo player. In 2011, Kareem and his teammates made history as the first African American polo team to win the Interscholastic National Championship.
After pursuing polo at a collegiate level and a career in finance, Kareem returned to Work to Ride this year as a full-time staff member, transitioning from a board member. His journey reflects the program’s ability to open doors and inspire participants to give back.
Celebrating 30 Years with a Bold Vision
This year, Work to Ride marked its 30th anniversary with a major milestone: a $15 million capital campaign to build a new indoor riding facility, rehabilitate existing structures, and establish an endowment. Having already raised over $12.5 million, the organization is on track to complete the state-of-the-art facility, enabling year-round programming and doubling its reach to serve more than 1,200 kids annually. The project is being brought to life by INTECH Construction, Becker & Frondorf, and Archer & Buchanan Architecture.
A Unique Model of Success
Work to Ride is unique not only for its equestrian focus but also for its ability to bridge diverse worlds. Participants engage in show jumping, barrel racing, and polo—an activity that has become a perennial favorite. Many of the horses are donated, giving them a second life while supporting the program’s mission.
Collaboration has been key to Work to Ride’s success. Partnerships with local schools and organizations like Drexel and Temple University have provided tutoring, mentorship, and volunteer opportunities, enhancing the program’s holistic approach.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As the new facility nears completion, Work to Ride is poised for growth. The team aims to serve as a model for other communities, enabling the expansion of the program across the country. By building a sustainable organization, Work to Ride ensures its impact will endure for generations to come.
How You Can Help
Work to Ride relies on community support to sustain and grow its mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or attending events like the annual Philadelphia Polo Classic, there are many ways to get involved. Currently, the organization is running a matching campaign through the end of the year, doubling the impact of contributions toward their capital campaign.
Inspiration in Action
For Kareem, the program that shaped his life continues to inspire. “This organization changed my life. It gave me opportunities and opened doors,” he shares. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of community, determination, and giving back.
