The organization, founded in 1965, has a rich history of serving Philadelphia’s black and brown populations, particularly in North Philadelphia. "Our mission is to provide essential support to aging adults, individuals with disabilities, and those seeking mental wellness," Bonds shared. This commitment is deeply rooted in the belief that all people deserve a fulfilling, connected life—regardless of their age or life circumstances.

Comprehensive and Inclusive Senior Support Programs

North City Congress delivers a wide range of services designed to meet the diverse needs of older adults, including comprehensive case management, healthcare coordination, and social activities. Their approach emphasizes mental wellness and social engagement, recognizing that these are vital to helping seniors thrive. For instance, the Older Adult Community Center is a lively, welcoming space that offers everything from yoga to community meals, ensuring a sense of belonging and vitality.

The organization has also embraced intergenerational programming, where seniors and youth come together to share skills, hobbies, and wisdom. "Our summer program brings together different generations, creating a unique exchange of talents and experiences," Bonds explained. In addition to senior support, North City Congress is expanding its reach with a new Family Institute. This program provides targeted support for children with autism and their families, helping parents understand and embrace their children’s unique strengths. As Bonds noted, “It's crucial that we not only support the child but also equip families to nurture and celebrate them.”

The organization’s impact goes beyond just providing services—it changes lives. Bonds shared the story of one community member who initially joined to participate in activities but eventually became an employee. "He began as a visitor, enjoying the sense of community, and then became part of our team, contributing as a maintenance worker and receiving mental wellness support along the way. His journey reflects our commitment to supporting individuals at every stage.”

However, like many non-profits, North City Congress faces challenges. Funding for senior services is often limited, and addressing the pressing needs of an aging population requires creativity and perseverance. “Our work isn’t always in the spotlight, so we’re constantly advocating for greater support,” Bonds explained. Despite these challenges, North City Congress remains focused on growth and sustainability, aiming to meet increasing demand without compromising the quality of their services.
